Desa Mandiri Sapi (DMS) has entered a new phase since it was launched in 2017. The strategic programme that collaborates with multi-stakeholders such as the community, private sector, and financial institutions has impacted positively the local community, especially improving their welfare and environmental quality. This programme is using an integrated approach that consists of breeding, waste management, animal feed production, and the marketing of the product.
Targeting the local communities across Indonesia, the programme stimulated the born of the local entrepreneur with high capability and competency in the farming and livestock industry. It aims they could contribute positively to the community on a larger scale. Currently, the programme has been ongoing in West Java, Central Java, the Special Administrative Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java.
To ensure the programme is well-running, PT Pasir Tengah, a subsidiary of PT Widodo Makmur Perkasa Tbk with Yayasan Kesatriaan Entrepreneur Indonesia (KEI) give intensive assistance to the participants of the programme. The participants get technical assistance, an opportunity for trial and error, and leadership coaching to take a crucial decision.
The integrated approach of DMS programmes is also able to improve effectiveness and efficiency during the programme implementation. For example, the participants get technical assistance to produce high-quality cow feed which is made from forage materials and concentrate such as cassava, corn, and rice. This is part of a strategy to reduce cow feed cost production. In addition, cattle waste also can be utilised as a biofertiliser, especially for fertilising the forage materials and concentrating plants.
In addition, to ensure each participant in the group contributes maximally, each group of DMS is consisting of 50 cattle farmers and 60 farmers. Those numbers are determined based on the average ability of the farmers to do the daily task, which is divided into:
1. Breeding Partner2. Grower Partner3. Fattening Partner4. Trading Partner 5. Feed Production 6. Corn, Rice, and Cassava Cultivation.
In general, below is the process of the DMS programme:
1. The DMS programme starts with soft skill and hard skill training for all participants. It aims to know and understand better the business process.
2. Once the participants have met the requirement, the company will assist them to the funding institution – the bank. The DMS strategic partnership programme allows the participants to access the bank funding since they are ready and able to pay back the bank loan.
3. The production process is started once they have signed the credit agreement with the bank.
4. PT Pasir Tengah’s staff would assist the participants by doing weekly visits and risk analyses. If the staff find something not right, the company would do quick mitigation action.
5. PT Pasir Tengah guarantees buying the cow from the participants.
That is a short explanation of how the DMS programme works. It is not an easy thing to do community assistance, but changing ourselves to be better is possible if we believe and work together to make it comes true.
